Reference on Back and Neck Pain for Patients
Dr. Mark D. Brown, Professor and Chairman Emeritus, Department of Orthopaedics, is the author of a book on back and neck pain which will be released the first week of June 2008.
In Conquer Back and Neck Pain: Walk It Off!, renowned spine specialist Mark Brown, MD, Ph.D, explains exactly what causes back pain and why humans are so predisposed to spinal problems.
Dr. Brown includes a detailed questionnaire to help you identify which of the seven types of back pain you are experiencing, and then explains each type in easy-to-understand terms. Contrary to what you might expect from a spinal surgeon, Dr. Brown actually advocates against turning to surgery in most cases of back pain, and he warns against many other pitfalls that people with back pain commonly fall into when looking for relief. Avoiding these mistakes, along with incorporating gentle aerobic exercise, will almost always allow you to “walk off” your back or neck pain naturally.
With an interesting collection of anecdotes, Conquer Back and Neck Pain: Walk It Off! brings fresh and new insight into how the back really works and how to finally find healthy relief from back pain.
Conquer Back and Neck Pain: Walk It off! will be available in June 2008 through major bookstores or order from Sunrise River Press by calling 1-800-895-4585 or by visiting www.sunriseriverpress.com.

Study Guide for Medical Students
Jonathan R. Gottlieb, M.D., is the author of SOAP for Orthopaedics. Dr. Gottlieb, a former resident of the department, received his medical degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and an undergraduate degree from the University of Florida where he graduated Summa Cum Laude.
SOAP for Orthopedics features 60 clinical conditions with each case presented in an easy to read two-page layout. Each step presents information on how that case would likely be managed. Questions under each category teach the students important steps in clinical care. Covering the problems most commonly encountered on the wards, the text uses the familiar SOAP note format to record important clinical information and guide patient care.
The SOAP series is a unique resource that also provides a step-by-step guide to learning how to properly document patient care. SOAP format puts the emphasis back on the patient's clinical problem, not the diagnosis. This series is a practical learning tool for proper clinical care, improving communication and accurate documentation. They not only teach students what to do, but also help them understand why. Students will find these books a “must-have" to keep in their white-coat pockets for wards and clinics.
Dr. Gottlieb’s book is available for $24.95 on Amazon.com
